Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS) is one of the nation’s largest and most respected providers of hospital and healthcare services. Over the past 40 years, it has been sharing their care, talents and passion with patients nationwide. UHS currently operates 400 acute care hospitals, behavioral health facilities and ambulatory centers across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and U.K.
UHS was looking to completely upgrade its security systems throughout its Streamwood Behavioral Health Hospital (SBHS). Its existing system consisted of an outdated analog camera system and traditional keyed doors. In order to enhance its video and access control security, Skynet Security needed to scope a system design that consisted of over 200 high-definition IP cameras and 150 card readers. Due to the expansive size of the facility, Skynet first needed to implement a network infrastructure capable of handling the multitude of security IP devices that needed to be deployed.
Skynet Security designed and implemented a network infrastructure that consisted of Dell Power-over-Ethernet Switches and a fiber backbone that ran through each of the facilities four levels. With the network infrastructure in place, Skynet deployed over 200 security cameras to cover all critical areas inside and outside of the Hospital. All camera form factors and resolution were specifically chosen based their location and area of coverage. The keycard access control system spanned almost all of the behavioral hospitals doors to ensure optimal security controls. Because both systems are fully integrated, SBHS is able to immediately view all video events associated with specific access control events. In addition, all of the nursing stations are equipped with video monitoring stations of their respective units, allowing them complete transparency. In the event of an emergency, all nursing stations and hospital management can lockdown the entire hospital with the press of a physical button or through the access control software. Now SBHS can have peace of mind that its staff and patients are safe and secure.
